Kamilah stepped inside the reach of the spear and tossed the guardsman over her hip. "Your stance too wide, riverman," she said as she shifted into the next guard, his sword in the middle of an over-hand swing. She caught his forearm and twisted, sending the man into a flip; her own blade following through, whacking him across the chest with the flat side. "He left himself open for counter," she explained to the third and last guard who stood at the door.
Most the patrons of the Dragon's Rest had fled out the front door or up the stairs. But those with courage --or too much drink-- remained to watch the brawl or participate in it. The common room was a mess; tables upturned, broken chairs and bruised bodies lay scattered across the floor.
"In the name of Lord Baron Raam Cor...uh, Miras, put down your, uh, weapon." The guard lowered his spear.
"The Great Lord Raam who named himself after a horse." Kamilah sheathed her blade and walked toward the guard. "I heard you northerners sometime take on your lady's name." She grabbed the shaft and pulled the guard to her, stepping to the side and letting his momentum carry him to pile of guards behind her. "A pity really, the pretty ones are always gay, or worse in this case."
A cheer erupted from the Qadirans in the room, drowning out the moans of the wounded. Eight drunkards and three guards, she thought. They should have had more friends. In kelesh she said, "What they lacked in skill they make up for in ale!". Then in common, "My brother may be a fool but he is no traitor. I will hear no more ill words against my kin."
Kamilah grabbed a handful of gold coins from her pouch and slammed them on the counter. "Sorry for the trouble, 'keep." She heard the Qadirans talking about her as she left. Great, another story to attract the soldier wanna-bes.
The al Hassein estate was quiet when Kamilah made it home. The servants had left when their master was exiled, and no doubt they left with more than they owned. The only occupant of the house now were Kamilah al Hassein and her sister, Rana.
The Baron had given ownership of the deed and property to Kamilah, along with a rather large bag of gold coins he said the kingdom owed Zuhair. The gold she kept but the property she gave to Rana. Let her deal with property and the counting of coppers, she smiled to herself, I'll spend the big stuff.
"Sister, is that you?" Rana's voice called from somewhere in the house.
"Of course it's me. We haven't had a guest since the zealot left."
"Oh, well, a letter arrived for you. It's addressed from the Lord Baron..."
