The Magister and the Exile

Kalladar found himself in the Dark. He felt stronger than he could remember. Alone in the dark, he called for light, but it flickered into being and went out. He saw he was in a small crypt like building and there were no doors. Magic didn’t work here. He went through his memory, but was unable to think clearly. He stood there for an unknown time and then he felt a presence. It didn’t seem like Mip. In fact, she had to be out of range, as he was unable to sense her. Then a voice sounded. It started as a whisper, then louder. He was being pulled into one wall. He tried to fight, but the pull was strong. Moments later, he was moving through the prison of his mind.

Another undetermined length of time and darkness was replaced by moonlight. He was lying on the ground, almost where he fell. Someone was there, speaking soothing words. He had a poultice where the poison had entered. More importantly, he was alive. He looked up at the female Elf who had healed him.

“Have you seen a small Faerie dragon around here?”

Riada replied, “My name is Riada Theltyr. I heal you and the first thing you want to know about is a fey creature?”

“Sorry, where are my manners. I am Kalladar Elendel, Magister for the realm of Miras. Thank you for healing me. Now not to be rude, but please tell me you know where Mip has gone.”

“I did meet Mip. She went to fetch someone named Jhod and a few guards to come back here. She has been gone for about 3 hours. I have removed the poison from you, but you will need additional restoration to fully recover.”

“Thank you again.” Kalladar moved to a seated position with Riada’s help.

“I was here because this is my home. I heard you earlier, about intending to build a city here. Is it true you would create a city combining Human and Elvish traditions? This land would belong to Miras, but I wish to protect my heritage. My sister is in Brevoy, but is an aspiring Wizard. She won’t come here without an academy. Would Miras allow me to stay and protect this land.”

Kal asked her about the home statement and Riada admitted to being an exile from Brevoy. She did not think they would allow her entry into Kyonin.

Kalladar made mention he would need someone for the defense of this city and could bring soldiers. “Perhaps you would consider watching over the scouts for this area. They must range far and bring details. I am certain we can have this city built within the next month. I will work on an academy here for your sister and others looking to train in Magic. I will speak of you when the council next meets. Now, I feel better, let us begin.”

A Magister Falls

Vordekai had fallen and Kalladar found himself once again in Stagfell. Some things had turned out better than he had hoped. The technique used to restore Raam had been successful and he was Baron once again. There had been brief turmoil at home while they were on the path to Vordekai, however, Balian’s wife and Valora were instrumental in maintaining the feeling that the Baron was still there.

Raam had graciously invited those from his inner circle to be Lords of the Kingdom. Kalladar readily agreed and immediately thought of the Elven fortress discovered in the East as a base of operations. He recommended to Raam that this would be a good location to build an Academy, so any magical mishap would not endanger the capital.

During the next two months, Kalladar and Tzim visited different locations in the Kingdom for possible plans for expansion. During the first visit to Aradel, as the fortress was originally called, that he decided to build a small shrine to Desna and asked for a sign. He visited again later in the week. Something nagged at him the first time and he felt he was being stalked. He knelt at the shrine. Mip cried a warning as a Drow Assassin appeared.

Kal fired a spell and jumped across the battlefield. Kal found himself slow to move and another Drow easily struck him with a dagger containing Purple worm poison. Kalladar struggled to get up and did a quick move across the battlefield. Strength failing, he fell to the ground. He found he was looking at the face of the first Drow, dead from his spell. He heard sounds of battle and mip yelling his name. Tendrils of Shadow dragged him into darkness.

Kalladar and the secret of the Tablets

The sky was dark, complete with Thunder and the promise of rain. Kalladar had paused in his work on a new spell and pulled out a bottle of Firewine with a few glasses. He had the feeling he would have company soon.

“Mip”, Kalladar thought to his familiar, “please do not eat any more of the herbs. They are hard to find”. Mip made a sound, that Kalladar knew was a laugh,

“You will have more, master. Now, it is time for my mid-evening nap”. Kalladar looked outside and noticed a squad of outriders approaching.

“This should be interesting”.

Shortly afterwards the front door is opened by an Outrider who looks around quickly then leaves. The door opens and Chase walks in. Chase walked up to the table setting down what seems to be a rather ornate leather bound chest on the counter.

"Kalladar, I have need of your eleven wisdom in a matter of some ancient texts."

“A puzzle? I am intrigued.” Kalladar undid the leather bindings and carefully reviewed the stone tablets inside the chest. “This will take a while. I can read the tablets, but the dialect is old. I will have to do research. What do you hope to find here?”
“I located these tablets near a shrine to Erastil. I seek this knowledge to better serve him.” Chase pulls out a pouch and sets it on the table. “This is to help with the research”

“Lord Chase, although I do ask for recompense when I craft items, I do not require funds for research. I do appreciate the offer. Knowledge is a reward in and of itself.”

“You have my thanks then, Kalladar. Let me know as soon as you have something”

4 months later . . . . . .

Chase entered the shop and headed straight to the study. Kalladar had sent word earlier that day that he had a significant discovery.
“Kalladar, you sent for me?”

“Yes. I have made a discovery. You may find it interesting, and Erastil will probably be pleased.

“I knew I came to the right person. What did you find.”

“I discovered that the tablets are in fact magical, although the magic is limited. It was required that I seek methods to unlock the magic of these two objects. Now that I have, it is quite remarkable. The first tablet speaks of a Bow of Erastil. I had to correlate the data in the tablet with histories in the area, and cast several divination spells to make certain.”

“Very good. Have you discovered the location?”

“The Bow of Erastil will be found in a vast region of the plains that historically has belonged to centaurs. That should be to the East of here. The second tablet tells of a Quiver of Erastil. Historically, this Quiver was owned by the Saint of Isam. However, I have discovered that it was actually gifted to a low-born disciple and lost long ago. It is said he was part of a group of travelers that tried to cross the Tors of Levenies and was lost in the mountains there.”

“To bring these back into the light will revitalize the church. You have done a great service and this will be remembered.” After Chase had retrieved the tablets and had been gone for some time. Kalladar opened the bottle of Firewine. He poured himself and Mip a portion, sat in his overstuffed chair, and pondered the future.

Kalladar - The Memory

Recorded: 421 FFM* - 1 month after Fey Ball.
Location: Guild house of Kalladar Elendel

Kalladar Elendel left the Kingdom Edicts next to the printing press and used prestidigitation to remove the ink and dust that had adhered to him during the process.

Kal was distracted and had been since the group had returned from the Fey ball. It had been over a month now. He summoned an unseen servant to sweep the floor and fell to his knees. The image was unmistakable.

He had seen the same scene before at the Fey ball. He was younger and had just slain an undead wizard and his minions. Bones surrounded him. He felt powerful. He started searching for something. Darkness began to surround him. "Turn around" Kalladar whispered. Then something reached out from the darkness, accompanied by an evil laugh and overwhelming presence, and the vision disappeared.

It wasn't just that the vision was of his younger self. He didn't remember the fight. His entire life is mostly foggy. Lately, when he has tried to think of a detail of an event over 50 years ago, it was cloudy or missing pieces. The information was there, but no real memories. This is the reason he now chose to relearn magic.

He had too many of these episodes lately and needed people around him. That is one of the things that brought him to this civilization. He needed to look into bringing more crafters or mages here.

It was a little too quiet inside, so he climbed to the roof. There he had a small altar to Desna, with growing plants about four feet high surrounding this portion of his abode. Here he had an unobstructed view of the night sky, so he reclined against the vines to contemplate the night.

Mip'Talitheyra glided down from her vantage point landing on his chest, selecting her spot and relaxed. They conversed about the Fey ball. When they discussed his vision, Kal was disconcerted that he considered her counsel wise. They discussed the ball some more and Kal was slightly amused. Mip was evidently very taken with Perlivash and kept repeating it was time to visit him. Kal assured Mip he would take her there.

But tonight he will spend focusing on the stars. He had learned a new memory. Time would tell what it meant.
