Hero!

The inn was busy. Serklik liked that. He slipped in through the front door, ducked under the counter and made his way to the stairs that lead up to the second floor. The floorboards were wood, and old, but with his light weight he quietly moved down the hall to the fourth door on the left.

"It's just another job, Serklik," Derik had said, "What are you so worked up about?"

"I Hero of Sootscales, not deliverer of letters!"

"This isn't a delivery. It's a setup, see. He must not know that he has the letter." Derik tried explaining it to him, but Serklik was a theif not a courier.

Serklik's tail twitched and thumped against the wall . Stupid tail! He grabbed it to keep it in place and put his ear to the door. He could hear voices inside.

"...stone was burning I tell you. I saw it with my own eyes. Something big is going to happen soon, mark my words."

"Something big is always happening in Miras. Why do you think I'm leaving? I once saw a man materialize into a chimney. Killed him instantly it did, and smoked up the entire building. That's not even the strangest thing I've seen. Wolves in churches, speaking and learning. Vampires plucking maidens right off the ..."

Serklik moved away from the door. That must be the right room, they gossip like friends of Derik. At the end of the hall he found a window half open to the night air. He pulled out a pair of climbing claws from his pack and went out the window, scrambling his way up.

He could see all of Leveton from the roof. It not so big as Stagfell, Serklik thought. He had never been far from the den he was born in. Moving to the mines had been a life altering journey, and now Derik wanted the kobold champion to journey all the way to the border of Miras to deliver a letter.

Serklik crawled quietly across the roof to where the room should be and waited. When the last patron left the inn or retired to their rooms--and an hour after that--the kobold thief lowered his rope and climbed down to the window. It was open so he slipped in and looked around.

The room was dark but that was no problem for Serklik, a Hero of Sootscales. However; the room was also very small and that did prove to be a problem for his tail. An involuntary swish knocked over a candlestick on the nightstand. He turned to catch the candle and his tail knocked over a tray of fruit and cheese. It clattered to the ground.

One of the men started to move and make sleepy noises from the bed.

The letter! Serklik pulled out the wax sealed letter. "His satchel will have the official seal of Restov" Derek had said. That one! His deft fingers quickly opened and closed the bag, the new letter inside.

The man sat up, "Hey, wha.. who are you?"

"I courier!"

चोर
"THIEF!", the man yelled.

Serklik dove out the window and landed with an ease that surprised even himself. "HERO!" he wanted to shout back, but he wasn't stupid, so he didn't. He kept his back to the wall and looked for the best route out of town.

"Where's the candle?" he could hear the man in the room above him. "Hey, I think he stole our candle. Guards! Thief!"

I don't get enough gold for this, Serklik, Hero of Sootscales, thought as he once again found himself fleeing down a dark alley, away from men with spears.
