The Family Heirloom

It was miday when Kamilah al Hassein rode into her brother's camp. The banner that flew above his pavilion seemed to shine brighter than the sun itself, and the flames on the falchion danced as if they were alive. She wondered what glamour was worked into the material to reflect the light like that.

Tracking down the Sunsteed's camp had been more difficult than Kamilah had expected. Her brother never stayed in one place long, but she heard that the Ten Thousand had taken hold to east, near the border of Numeria, so that is where she went first. From there she learned where they were heading.

Madame Valoria was unable to tell her what happened to her brother's sword, Shihab al Din. The enchanted falchion had been passed down through the al Hassein family for more than ten generations. If the rumors Valoria told her were true, then she expected her brother to be dead by the time she arrived and someone would need to claim the blade. Kamilah intended to be that someone.

She handed her reigns to the boy by the hitching post and threw open the flap to the pavilion. Her uncle sat behind a desk looking over a map that was held down at the corners with stacks of mismatched sized books. He looked up when she entered.

"Kamilah." he said, surprised. "What are you doing here?" Her uncle was a handsome man with sharp features. His black hair was tied back in a tight braid, his eyebrows were trimmed to thin lines, and his beard was cut close and greased into a dagger point below his chin. The robes he wore were black ornate and bordered in red with an ancient scrollwork pattern.

"Uncle Yazid." She greeted him. The last time she had seen him he was riding with the Ten Thousand across Galt. Kamilah was leading a small group of dervish warriors to distract the Galt army so the main body to safely cross the dreadful country. That was almost half a year ago. "I did not expect to see you here, uncle, where is my brother?"

Her uncle took a sip from the goblet in front of him. "Zuhair's whereabouts are unknown. I take it you heard about the dragon?" he didn't give her a chance to answer. "Of course you have, or you would not be here."

"What do you mean unknown? I heard he took a spat of acid to the face. Surely something remains of him."

Yazid stood up and opened a small chest located at the foot of his cot. "Maybe it's best we continue this conversation in private." He pulled out a small orb and said a few works in the draconian tongue. "There," he said in kelesh, "now we may speak of your brother. It is not widely known in the camp, but your brother's body is not here. The priestess watches over an empty cot and lets no one look after him but herself."

"That's ridiculous. What of Shihab al Din?"

لدي
"By the grace of Sarenrae the sword's fate is known," he said, giving Kamilah a smug smile, "I have it."

Kamilah narrowed her eyes. "You have no right to Shihab. It belongs to me."

"You had your chance once as I recall, and it rejected you." He took another sip of wine. "And I don't think your sister is up for the challenge, so I say I do have the right. I've waited long enough."

"We'll see what my father has to say about that claim. Until then, uncle." Kamilah turned and stormed out of the pavilion. Uncle's a fool, she thought, he's to old to wield a falchion. What could he possible want to do with it. She honestly expected her brother to take longer to die--he did everything else slow.

Maybe the priestess would know more of what happened to Zuhair. She heard the stories on her way here of what happened. The black and her hill giants ambushed the company, and the dragon would have killed the whole lot of them if the silver had not interfered. The silver was larger, older and used it's size to slam into the black, driving her into the ground. When they hit the ground they crushed hill giants, centaur and man alike. And those who survived the impact painfully burned to spouts of acid and flame. Those who watched from afar spoke in awe of the sight. The black eventually managed to break free of the grapple and quickly disappeared into dusk. The silver towered over the field and beat her wings against the air before taking to the sky.

She found the priestess' tent not far from the small shrine that had been erected for Sarenrae. Kamilah knew the lady only for a short time. She was only in Miras a week before her brother was sent into exile. She reached for the flap of the tent and a woman's voiced spoke from within.

"Lady Kamilah, please enter. I've been expecting you."
