This broken blade was found in the tomb (and hands) of a long forgotten warrior hundreds of years old. The script covering this warrior's tomb reveals a betrayal by the warrior's brother who refused to bury the prized and honored blade with his body. A mistake it appears the warrior himself rose to personally correct.
Hastily chiseled script around the entrance to the tomb prove that once the sword was retrieved (and after the brother's death) that priests worked quickly to seal the mighty revenant within the confines of his own tomb along with his personal guard and attendants.
Digging further into the sword's origins reveals tales of finely crafted swords in the hands of barbarian kings in the wilds and a mysterious elven wizard that aided these kings in forging kingdoms out of the barbaric lands. The wizard enchanted powerful swords that would be held by the great kings and their successors over the centuries.
One tale in particular describes a blade with similar markings as the one Balian now carries. A barbarian king was gifted the Blade of Thorns and used it to strike down an ancient Dragon of Faerie that had entered the material plane from the First World. With the aid of the elven wizard, the barbarian king sealed the rift between Golarion and the First World, a primordial echo of creation that came into being before the gods created the multiverse.
