The Prey becomes the Hunter

Chase slipped up to the Brothel and watched the man in the dark gray cloak he had been following all afternoon enter it. This man had started out following him earlier that morning, until Chase spotted him. Then it was quite easy to lose the man on the busy streets of Restov and then turn the sport around. Chase had followed the man in the dark gray cloak as he looked to try and relocate his quarry having no luck he seemed to give up trying to find Chase and instead met with another man who was already following Raam and Fizz. The two men seem to follow Raam and Fizz most of the afternoon from several different shops in the magical district. As Raam and Fizz would leave one shop one of the men would duck into the shop and the other would continue following them to their next stop.

Chase loved this sort of game the cat and mouse feel of it made his pulse quicken, he knew he could slip up to either man at any time and slide his dagger into their kidney’s the pain stifling any scream for help as his it pierced their soft flesh. He could then turn their eyes to his and watch their life drain from them, but this was neither the time nor place for that sort of pleasure. Chase was here for a reason and that was to keep his friend safe and to find out who these men worked for. As the day stretched on Raam and Fizz met up with Balian and Zuhair.

Zuhair, Balian, Fizz, and Raam all seem to be in good spirits as the headed towards the merchant's house whose daughter we saved almost a week ago. The Merchant had been invaluable in making arrangements in Restov for letters of credit and arranging for our loot to be translated into workable currency for the supposed building of a future Kingdom that the group now seemed set on doing. But now we had to get back to our real job of taming the rest of the wilds on our new Kingdom and the Merchant had offered to hold a final banquet in our honor. Chase hated all the ceremony and had already bowed out of the dinner, relying on Balain’s slip of calling him an attendant to say he would be better serving his “lordship” by preparing the animals and wagons for the journey bag to Oleg’s tomorrow.

As Chase waited in the alley across the street from the brothel he could hear several different conversations from the interior of the building most sounded like clients and their whores. It was then that Chase noticed a lantern light coming from a window facing an alley on the second floor. Chase moved as quite as a shadow across the street and into the alley to get a better view. It was then that Chase noticed that the light the window came from must have been a corner room as the same lantern light illuminating the alleyway was also coming out a second window onto a balcony that overlooked a small backyard filled with fountain and some exotic flowering bushes. It was then that Chase saw the man in the dark gray cloak. The man was looking out the alley window and talking to someone behind him. The man then turned and looked at someone and said something that Chase could not hear over the noise in the downstairs common room. Chase stealthy moved into the backyard allowing the sound of the fountain and the small flowering bushes to hide his movements. It was then that Chase saw whom the man was talking to, an attractive woman.

As Chase tried to move close to hear what they were saying, they stopped talking and the lantern was shuttered. Chase decided to wait here in the backyard. As he made himself comfortable he broke of several twigs from the flowering a bush thinking that he would take them back to Oleg’s to give them to Karina to plant, she always loved planting flowers around Rigg’s old cabin that Chase had brought back for her on his journeys. After about a half an hour the man in the dark gray cloak came out the back door. He was smiling and laughing with a girl under each arm, "I told you ladies that I am a man of many talents, even your mistress sees that." The ladies laughed has the three of them stumbled out into the night.

Chase thought about following him, but he knew that this man, was nothing but a lackey. He knew that the person he needed to talk to was this the woman inside. It was child’s play in the darkness of the night for Chase to make his way up to the side of the building and up onto her balcony. Chase looked into the room letting his eyes adjust to the darkness it was empty, the door out to the balcony had a simple hook keeping it closed. Chase was pulling out his dagger to flip it when he noticed the simple bell trap on the door. Pulling out his tools he disabled the bell so it would not ring as he slipped into the room. Chase found a nice chair in the corner and sat down laying his bow across his lap with an arrow on the string and decided to wait till the mistress the man in cloak was speaking to returned. It was not much longer and hour or so perhaps when the door opened and the beautiful woman entered through the door, the light from a single candle in an attractive silver gilded candle holder highlighting her exotic features.

As she shut the door and started to walk to the lantern mounted on the wall by the dresser Chase spoke, “you work for Marson I presume.” Chase could instantly see her tense as her left hand that was moving up to the lantern slowly dropped to her back and appeared to grasp a small dagger hiding in the folds of her attractive gown..

She slowly turned setting the candle on the dresser, looking to the sound of my voice, her left hand never leaving the handle of the dagger now faced away from me. Chase could see her fingers gripping its handle in the mirror now behind her. “Why yes, I do and who might you be sir?” Her voice sounded like what Chase imagined liquid Mithril would sound like, strong yet gracefully so.

“I would be the man that the lackey who just left with the two whores was sent to follow but lost in the animal market.” She laughed evenly and Chase could see the grip on her dagger tighten, “Oh, so you call yourself a man do you Chase, from what I heard tell you were a demon released from hell and set upon the Bandits of the Greenbelt.”

Chase smiled, “Well, that might be the case, but I have a message for you and your boss Marson.” Chase stood up sliding the arrow back into his quiver on his hip and slinging his bow back over his shoulder. Chase then moved to the balcony door. “My partners and I now control the southern Riverlands.”

“Oh you do and what makes you presume that?” the exotic looking Mistress asked trying to sound as if she was in control of the conversation. Chase turned back to look at her his hand resting on the hilt of his new Rapier he had picked up the day before, “The reason I say that is because it’s the truth, I’m sure the Stag lord and all the other bandits that I have killed and left rotting down there can testify to that effect.”

As Chase pushed open the door on to the balcony with the heel of his boot he backed out the room, “You're a pretty woman, if you want to keep those looks you had better make some smart decisions on who to back in the new Lands." The mistress waited looking at Chase not sure if she should say something. Chase decided to to answer for her, "If you make the right choice send your man who was following me early out to Oleg's with your answer."

Her hand slid from the dagger at her back, “I might just do that Master Chase, and what plans do you have for a simple madam like me?” As Chase backed to the edge of the Balcony, he took his time fixing her with his intense dark eyes, “That is for me to determine, but perhaps you should ask Marson what became of the last pretty woman he sent out to undermine me and my partners."

She looked at me with something that looked like curiosity and apprehension, "Why don't you just tell me Devil spawn." Chase snorted at the insult he had heard much worse from a great deal better , "I fed her to the very Zombies she help create.” Chase could see her eyes flash with fear and with that Chase flipped backwards over the railing and landed in the ground below slipping back into the night.
