Yazid had waited for this moment, for when Shihab al Din would be in his possession, ever since he uncovered the dusty scripts locked away in his father's keep. The scripts were a history of the magic sword; some written by those who had wielded it, others by hired scholars consigned to uncover the origin and purpose of the unique magical properties that manifest the longer one keeps it.

The earliest record of the blade was in 2217 AR, during the Age of Enthronement, when the religion of the Dawnflower flourished in Osirion. The Qadiri satrapy viewed the religious cult as a threat and drove them back into the desert where they built Sarenrae's Bastion in what is now Katapesh. By 2253 AR, the cult of Sarenrae had assassinated the last of the Qadiri satraps and returned from exile, leading to the establishment of a line of independent Keleshite sultans. Ancestors to the Hassein family.

It was during this time of strife that Shihab al Din, "The Flames of God", first appeared. Even now it is told by the church to have been gifted to a warrior priest by an angel of Sarenrae--the bright flames that sometime manifest certainly give credit to this story, but the scrolls Yazid uncovered told a different tale.

In the mountains of western Osirion known as the Footprints of Rovagug, a volcano, Asuulek's Mouth, housed an ancient red dragon. Asuulek was searching the mountains for a lost artifact with a host of monstrous races under his command. The scholar believed Asuulek forged the blade with his own fiery breath and put a warmonger's curse on it to keep the humans distracted in their war and out of his search.

That was the story Yazid believed, as a fiery-tart handing out magic swords sounded absurd.

If speaking the dragon tongue helps shape arcane energy, what power would I gain if I were to tap into a sword forged of their essence? Yazid had tapped into the blade once before, triggering a small firestorm in the room. Kamilah had been there that day, before she left in search of her brother.

Yazid turned the spinneret on his ring (a habit to focus his mind) while he altered the words to a fireball spell, "ignis elementaris exaudi Asuulek et vocant." An orange flame bubbled out of the sword and traveled along the steel for a few moments before disappearing back into the fold. Interesting, he thought, I felt it again, a presence like a bond of blood or kin....
